Panjgur - land of date trees (Balochistan)
Panjgur is a district in Balochistan Province at the distance of 555 km from Quetta and is accessible by the Panjgur-Hoshab Highway N-85. It is a historical city having number of centuries old archaeological sites. It is also famous due to growing best quality dates in Pakistan.
Panjgur is bounded by Washuk, Awaran, and Kech districts. It is has boundary with the Saravan city in Sistan and Baluchistan Province of Iran. The Panjgur-Hoshab Highway N-85 runs across the center of the district and can be used to access the Gwadar Port. It is also connected with Kuhak International border with Iran by using Washap Road that connects with Road-92 in Iran. Panjgur Airport provides domestic air services in the city.
Panjgur is derived from two word panj and gor, which means five graves. As there are five popular historical graves in the district. There are some other historical building those are nearly going to ruins such as fort at Khudadadan, Band-e-Gillar, etc.
There five famous unknown graves in the district. Some people believe these belong to the Companion of Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). First is considered as the shrine of Shahu Qalandar. It is located near the Panjgur city and can be accessed within 15 - 20 minutes. It is going to be ruins due to negligence of authorities. Second is located near the first shrine in the shades of date trees and can be accessed to after driving 10 minutes more. It is much in good condition as compare to previous one. Other three shrines are located in the other side of the city, but those are also in bad condition. All of these graves represent the historical aspect of the district.
Parom is town in the Panjgur district and it has much pleasant weather as compare to other areas of the district. It is also fertile to produce various crops as well as production of different kinds of dates.
The Rakshan River is the main seasonal river in the district that flows in the middle of Panjgur with number of other seasonal streams. These streams and river are the main source of agriculture in this district. The main profession of people of this area is agriculture and farming. It is famous for the best quality and delicious dates in Pakistan. There are several orchards of dates covering vast area in the Panjgur district. Tourist must purchase the fresh dates from these orchards as gift of the Panjgur city. The main source to irrigate these date orchards is karezes water, but due to short of water, it becomes difficult to maintain these orchards.
Panjgur Lake is one of the best tourist attraction in the Panjgur district. It is located at a distance of 40 km from Panjgur city and can be accessed through Panjgur-Hoshab Highway N-85 and turn right toward Gowargo town. It is beautiful tourist spots in beginning of summer season and spring season and also attracts several migratory and local birds such as hawks, waterfowls, sparrows, etc.
The weather of the Panjgur district is extreme hot and dry in summer season, whereas winter is harsh cold. It receives limited amount of rainfalls in monsoon period.
