Rama Lake
Rama Lake is located at on elevation of 11,506 feet in Chongra village in the Astore District at a distance of 122km from Gilgit city. It is one of the most beautiful lakes in Pakistan with the lush green pastures and snow-covered peaks around it.
Access to Rama Meadows
From Astore main town, winding paved mountain road ascends up through dense pine trees and it takes 30 to 45 minutes to reach the PTDC Model in the lush and wider meadows of Rama on an elevation of 10,800 feet. From the lush pastures of Rama Meadows, the panoramic view of Chongra Peak (6,830 meters) and Nanga Parbat ridges. In the months of July and August, the meadows become full of wildflowers and attracts most of the tourists.
Accommodation in Rama Meadows
The PTDC Model with pine forests views is one of the best accommodation in the Rama Meadows. Along the PTDC Model, there are other hotels and private forest resort with splendid views of pine and cedar forests. Camping sites are also available along the streams flowing inside the meadows to live more close to the nature. One can also enjoy fishing along the streams and the warmth bonfire in the cold atmosphere of the Rama Meadows.
Rama Lake Jeep Trek
Rama Lake is easily accessed from Rama Meadows in just a one and half hour trek through the lush green pastures of Rama Meadows. From the Rama Meadows, an unpaved 4x4 jeep trek leads through the lush pastures along the ridges to access the glacial Rama Lake, that is one of the most beautiful lakes in Pakistan. After one and a half hour jeep ride, visitors have to hike for 15 minutes on the high ridges to reach to get the first view of the glacial waters of lake. One can also walk along the surrounding moraine ridges to get an elevated views of the lake waters with the reflection of mountain peaks. It takes hardly 10 minutes to trek over the rocky moraines and melted glaciers to reveal the lake basin. From here, climb the elevated grassy embankment to overlook the northern side of the Rama Lake for panoramic and wide-angle photographs of the turquoise water in front of Nanga Parbat, the Killer Mountain. The evening or morning time is the best time to take best shots with balanced light effects.
Climate of Rama Lake
The climate of Rama Lake is alpine cold due to surrounding glaciers and it becomes extreme cold in evening with chilled wind with circular flow inside the valley. At night, the temperature drops to freezing point, so camping becomes harsh near lake.
Due to high-altitude and covered within the snow-covered mountain peak, it receives heavy snowfall from October to May. It makes winter season too much harsh there and it becomes totally inaccessible. For visitors, the best season is summer from June to September.
