Sheosar Lake

Sheosar Lake, also known as Blind lake, is located in Deosai National Park at an elevation of 13,589 feet. From the Astore district side, it is located at the distance of 16 km via Chillum Chowki. From the opposite side, it is at the distance of 65 km from Skardu main town. It is one of the highest alpine lakes in the World.

Sheosar Lake is famous for a calm and peaceful atmosphere within the endless plains of colorful flowers in Deosai plateau. The lush green and vast green mounds and plains of Deosai make it a perfect view of reflection of cloudy sky with greenish touch.

Accessing the Sheosar Lake

Due to high-altitude, the Deosai Plains are only accessible by using 4x4 jeep. Standard vehicles are not able to cross the plains due to deep water crossings, highly rugged, and rocky patches on the trek.

Due to its high altitude, the Deosai plains are only accessible from July to September only due to heavy and deep snow on the treks. It becomes difficult to move on the winter season as well as before mid of the summer season due to heavy snowfall without any warning.

Access via Skardu District

Early start from the main Skardu town, jeep moves on the rugged and bumpy trek toward the Deosai plains. After crossing the Satpara Lake, trek ascends toward the highest plains of the World. You will be in Deosai plains as passing from the Ali Malik Mar Pass. Jeep struggles to cross the vast and rolling plains for nearly 2 to 3 hours and then is descending slightly down to access the Sheosar Lake at the western edge of the Deosai Plains.

Access via Astore District

If you are coming from Astore side, you have to cross Chillum Chowki to enter into the Deosai Plains. It is shorter but steeper route as compare to the route from Skardu. Trek sharply moves up to the Deosai plains to access the Sheosar Lake within one and a half hour nearly. It is an ideal route from the Karakoram Highway, if you are planning to visit Sheosar Lake only instead of exploring the Skardu region.

Camping near Sheosar Lake

Deosai Plains has remarkable beauty and travelers need time to explore it and observe the nature as well as wild life there. For this purpose, the Sheosar Lake is the best place for camping and spending night in the National Park.

In clear days, the white peaks of the Nanga Parbat can be seen from the ridges near the Sheosar Lake. It is good place to get the panoramic view of the Nanga Parbat on a lucky day.

Night View in the Deosai Plain

Night view is one of the superb and magnificent piece of sky with full of shining and bright stars as in the large bowl over the head. One can plan the perfect days to travel here to get the best night view in the darkest nights of the month.

Precautions to Travel in the Deosai Plains

Before planning to visit the highest alpine lake in the Deosai Plains, it is recommended to carry proper basic level medical kit to avoid the altitude sickness. It is much common in travelers to face altitude sickness there due to cold and thin air atmosphere. Travelers must have plenty of water with them to stay hydrated and also to minimize physical exertion.

Wildlife in the Deosai Plains

Deosai National Park is a reserved area to preserved different wild species specially Himalayan Brown Bear. You can easily observe different wild animals and birds in days, but specially in night while camping near the Sheosar Lake.
