Ultar Sur Peak

Ultar Sar is located on the southeastern part of Batura Muztagh, a sub-range of Karakoram. It stands at an elevation of 24,239 feet above the sea level. Ultar Sar is unique due to its vertical rise above local terrain. Its south flank dramatically rises over 17,400 ft above the Hunza River at only 9 km distance from Karimabad, so it makes Ultar Sar as the most visible peak from short distance. This immense vertical rise makes it the most dangerous mountain in the Karakoram Range. It is more prone to rockfall, icefall, and avalanche hazards.

First Summit of Ultar Sar

It was first climbed in 1996 from the Southwest Ridge in the Japanese expedition led by Akito Yamazaki. He fell ill due to extreme exertion in the heavy storms while descending down and died due to altitude sickness in the base camp.

Due to harsh and unexpected weather conditions and numerous mountainous hazards, peak almost has negligible number of commercial expedition now-a-days, and remain it as least attempting peak.

Ultar Sar & Hunza Valley

Due to its short distance vertical height from the base terrain, it remains clearly visible as you drive along the Hunza River canyon on the main KKH while entering in Hunza Valley. As you drive upward, its lower rock ramparts are dominating. In Karimabad, the mountain ridge becomes almost vertically above you and leave little space for the sky.

Extreme Level Hiking to Base Camp

An moderate level extreme hiking can be perform through the steep Ultar gorge trails to reach the open and wide summer grazing pastures on the base camp. At the base camp, the sheer rocky vertical walls of Ultar Sar leave no space in your camera lens from base to summit. It is 4 to 6 hours trek through the beautiful craving water channels and icy ridges of the Ultar Glacier.
